27 Nov. 2009 – Symposium: “China’s Development and Its Relation with the Netherlands: Past and Future”

On the 27th of November, ACO helped to facilitate a symposium of the Friendship Association China-Netherlands (VNC). The symposium was held in The Hague City Hall and was chaired by the former Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bernard Bot. Keynote speeches were given by Prof. Peter Ho, Dean of Chinese Economy and Development of Leiden University; His Excellency Mr. Zhang Jun, the Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands; and Mr. Pieter de Gooijer, Director-General Politcal Affairs of the Dutch Mininstry of Foreign Affairs. The interesting speeches and the compelling panel discussion that followed touched upon a broad range of topics, ranging from the visit of the Dalai Lama to the International Climate Conference in Copenhagen. The overall theme, however, was threefold: (i) China’s development and its changing role in the world, (ii) the development of the Sino-Dutch relation from a Chinese perspective, and (iii) the development of the Sino-Dutch relation from a Dutch perspective.

In addition, there were three exhibitions. There was an exhibition of historical photographs on the Sino-Dutch relationship – an exhibition of photographs on modern buildings in China – and an exhibition of SEAMAN Foundation with paintings of Chinese artists who had visited the Netherlands.
